Quantum computing took a giant leap forward on the world stage today as NASA and Google, in partnership with a consortium of universities, launched an initiative to investigate how the technology might lead to breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.
The new Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab will employ what may be the most advanced commercially available quantum computer, the D-Wave Two, which a recent study confirmed was much faster than conventional machines at defeating specific problems. The machine will be installed at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Facility at the Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley and is expected to be available for government, industrial, and university research later this year.
Google believes quantum computing might help it improve its web search and speech recognition technology. University researchers might use it to devise better models of disease and climate, among many other possibilities. As for NASA, “computers play a much bigger role within NASA missions than most people realize,” says quantum computing expert Colin Williams, director of business development and strategic partnerships at D-Wave.

A new free Xbox game gives anyone the chance to steer through seven minutes of terror and attempt to safely land NASA’s newest rover, the Mars Science Laboratory.
MSL, which is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet the night of Aug. 5, is a car-sized nuclear-powered roverdesigned to search for signs of life on Mars, past or present. It is the largest robot that engineers can currently landon the Martian surface and its descent from space includes a complex list of events that have to happen perfectly to ensure success.
After entering the top of the Martian atmosphere, MSL will use its heat shield to slow down to slightly above Mach 2. It will then deploy the largest supersonic parachute ever used on an interplanetary mission to get to landing speed. Once the parachute is jettisoned, the spacecraft will fire up rockets and slow down even further. A UFO-like platform will gingerly lower the rover down on wires until, about 25 feet above the surface of Mars, MSL will be placed on the ground, hopefully ready to roll. Once it has brought its quarry to the ground, the platform will fly off and crash far from the rover to prevent any damage.

BREAKING: Kepler Telescope Discovers a System of Six Small Exoplanets

Nature Magazine reports a NASA-Kepler discovery of a system that has six low-mass, low-density exoplanets that transit their star.  The system is being designated Kepler-11.  These planets are rather unusual for their combination of low mass and low density, and are surrounded at least with gaseous envelopes, or are likely to be icy.

It seems as if there are more questions than answers about this at the moment, but we thought it would be worth sharing.

As what promises to be a crippling winter snowstorm moves across the United States, threatening areas from New Mexico to New England, NASA captured this photograph using GOES-13, one of a series of satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration out of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “Heavy snow is expected today in portions of northern Iowa, southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Snowfall from the system extends from Michigan west to Montana, Idaho, Utah and Arizona. A mix of rain and snow also stretches into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, and it is all moving east,” NASA explained, covering most of the American heartland. “This system appears to be as large as 1/3rd of the Continental U.S.”
